LO1- Martin Parr

This is a picture Martin Parr did, which clearly has a lot of meaning to it. The composition of this image is well put together, as the iconography such as the knife and the coconut shells signify the unease and instability of this society. The genre of this image is social reportage, which martin Parr specialises in to connote the un glamour in this world. Indirect address is being used throughout this image apart from one, which tells me that this image is spontaneous and not planned. The photograph has a lot of meaning to it, which was Martin's intensions. The colour is toned down in this image to represent the harsh, hard working in an unfair world; however the bright red and bright yellow tops draw your attention to them, bringing an element of happiness to it. The colour is natural to show that this image is real and people have to live their lives like this. It creates an illusion of realisation to the view, which was Parr's intension.

This links to a theme dystopian as it connotes the unfairness of these peoples lives. The floods of coconuts symbolises the over crowding population and the struggles people face today. Natural light is used, Martin will have used a small aperture and fast shutter speed to avoid over-exposure to create a realistic image. Another photographic elements used in this image is deep depth of filed because everything is in focus, the reason why Martin has done this is to show that every aspect in this image has importance and meaning, which helps to create the narrative of this image. Martin has also used fitness for purpose to show how stereotypically African people work within poverty, to get a reaction of the public and the media.

In my opinion I think Martin Parr is trying to connote the instability of poverty around the world. He used stereotypical people signify the realism of his narrative. He contrast gloomy colours and bright colours to connote hard work but happiness into his photograph. I believe the photographer is trying to get a reaction out of the public, so there could may be changes in society. This links to identify as it shows peoples lifestyle within a photograph. It captures their emotion so that we get a idea of how they feel in this society.
